Central Equatorial Pacific Cooling During the Last Glacial Maximum

چکیده
Establishing tropical sea surface temperature (SST) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is important for constraining equilibrium climate sensitivity to radiative forcing. Until now, there has been little data from central equatorial Pacific in global compilations, with foraminiferal assemblage-based estimates suggesting region was within 1°C of modern temperatures LGM. This stark contrast multi-proxy evidence eastern and western model simulations which support larger cooling. Here we present first glacial SST Mg/Ca Globigerinoides ruber. Our results show that cooled by about 2.0°C LGM, previous compilations but agreement models. a magnitude LGM cooling, thus sensitivity, than studies relied on assemblages Pacific.

Western Pacific thermocline structure and the Pacific marine Intertropical Convergence Zone during the Last Glacial Maximum
Paleoclimate proxy evidence suggests a southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) during times of Northern Hemisphere cooling, including the Last Glacial Maximum, 19–23 ka before present. However, evidence for movement over the Pacific has mainly been limited to precipitation reconstructions near the continents, and the position of the Pacific marine ITCZ is less well constrai...
متن کاملOn the magnitude of temperature decrease in the equatorial regions during the Last Glacial Maximum*
Based on the data of temperature changes revealed by means of various palaeothermometric proxy indices , it is found that the magnitude of temperature decrease became large with altitude in the equatorial regions during the Last Glacial Maximum. The direct cause of this phenomenon was the change in temperature lapse rate, which was about ( 0 . 1 ± 0 . 05) 't: / 100 m larger in the equator durin...
متن کاملThe Last Glacial Maximum.
We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pac...
متن کاملThe role of ocean-atmosphere interactions in tropical cooling during the last glacial maximum
A simulation with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model configured for the Last Glacial Maximum delivered a tropical climate that is much cooler than that produced by atmosphere-only models. The main reason is a decrease in tropical sea surface temperatures, up to 6 degrees C in the western tropical Pacific, which occurs because of two processes. The trade winds induce equatorial...

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I wish to thank my research advisor and co-advisor, Dr. Kim Cobb and Dr. Emanuele DiLorenzo. They have put a tremendous number of hours into this project while teaching me that conducting research is challenging, tiring, but more importantly, fun and inspiring. I also wish to thank Dr. Yen, both who introduced me to the world of academia. Working in both of ...
